Illahis, or devotional
poetry set to music, have been used in Turkey for centuries in Muslim
ceremonies. From as early as the 12th century to the present day,
Muslims employ illahis as a spiritual practice to remember the Divine
Presence. This poetry emphasizes love of God, His Messengers, and all
of humanity. Predominate themes are spiritual tolerance and endurance,
forgiveness and peace. The poetry of Yunus Emre, Sidki Baba, Ummi
Sinan, Pir Sultan Abdul, Ali Ufki and other great literary and spiritual
personalities are sung by the Zevk Ensemble. |
