Zevk Ensemble has developed
slide show programs that may be of interest to students and general
audiences:
"Wooden Mosques of the Hindu Kush" is a journey
through the Northwest Frontier Province of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan.
Father and son trekked through this area in 1994 photo documenting woodwork
traditions of the region. The frames record rich detail and colorful
views of Pashtun people, places and traditional architecture and crafts in
an area that up until now had little exposure in the United States. It
is timely to allow students a chance to travel to this region
through viewing these slides.
"Souks and Shrines: Diyarbakir, Urfa and
Damascus" is a slide collection compiled in four separate trips to
Turkey and Syria from 1997 to 2002. These slides show unique
architectural and historical sites of pilgrimage and worship specific to
Islam. The colorful souks or marketplaces are alive with craftsmanship
and social atmosphere. There are stunning portraits of Kurdish,
Turkish and Arab people. Again, it is an opportunity for students
to have an up to date glimpse of vibrant places that seem very remote from
Americans.

"Damascus:
City of Cultural and Spiritual Treasure" is an in-depth view of the Islamic
heritage of one of the most ancient cities of the world.
"Mud Mosques of Mali," documented in 2003,
depicts the unique adobe styles of mosques from Bamako to Timbuctoo.
The architectural jewel of the Djenne Mosque is featured along with colorful
markets and captivating faces.
The slide shows are not about religion per se,
but highlight life in very different Muslim regions. Students will
certainly have many questions and much to think about. Program
presentation in 60-75 minutes to allow additional discussion time.
We also present an interesting and informative
lecture called "Jerusalem: the View from Islam" outlining the Muslim history
of the city and our personal experiences there as contemporary Muslims.
Our presentation is quite unusual and valuable as there is very little
information available on this topic.
